Creating an Event: Overview

How to choose an event type and create your first event with the wizard.

Accessing the Event Wizard

To create a new event, start from the Organizer Dashboard:

  1. Log in to Kompdesk and navigate to the Organizer Portal
  2. Your Organizer Dashboard displays all your events with stats showing your total, published, and unpublished events
  3. Click the "Create Event" button at the top of the dashboard
  4. Choose the kind of event you want to run (see below)
  5. The wizard opens and guides you through the setup steps for that event type

Choosing an Event Type

Kompdesk supports three kinds of events:

Event TypeWhat It Is
In-Person CompetitionA live judged event with registration, a schedule, scoring, and awards
Online CompetitionDancers submit videos; judges score in their own time within a judging window
Production / ShowcaseA live ticketed show with a curated programme of performances. No judging, scoring, or registration

The event type is fixed once the event is created. It can't be changed later. All three types use the same wizard; steps that don't apply to your event type are simply hidden. See "Running an Online Competition" and "Running a Production or Showcase" for the full per-type guides.

Other ways to start:

  • Copy an existing event: From the dashboard, click the copy icon on an existing event to pre-fill the wizard with that event's settings
  • Resume a draft: If you previously started creating an event but didn't finish, you'll be prompted to resume your saved draft when you re-open the wizard

Your Events on the Dashboard

The Organizer Dashboard is your home for managing all events:

  • Filter tabs let you view All, Published, or Unpublished events
  • Search by event name, venue, or location
  • Draft events (in progress): Click to continue editing in the wizard
  • Published/active events: Click to open the Event Dashboard for full management
  • Deleted events are archived and can be viewed in a collapsible section at the bottom

The Wizard Steps

The wizard walks you through all the configuration your event needs. For an in-person competition you'll see the full list below: 6 steps are required and the rest are optional. You can skip optional steps and add those details later from the Event Dashboard.

StepNameRequired?What You Configure
1BasicsYesEvent name, dates, currency, visibility
2VenueNoVenue name, address, capacity
3TicketsNoSpectator ticket pricing per day
4Age GroupsYesAge divisions (e.g., Mini, Junior, Teen)
5StylesYesAvailable styles (e.g., Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop)
6LevelsYesSkill levels (e.g., Recreational, Competitive)
7Perf. TypesYesSolo, Duo, Trio, Group, Battle
8DurationsNoMax performance time per category
9SectionsNoCategory combinations (Age, Style, Level, and Type)
18Entry settingsNoWho may enter, and what the entry form offers
10FeesNoRegistration and entry fees
11ScoringNoPodium thresholds and result visibility

13TermsNoTerms and conditions, policies
14InfoNoFood, accommodation, contacts
15MusicNoMusic upload settings
16QuestionsNoCustom registration questions
17ReviewYesFinal review and event creation

Other event types see fewer steps:

  • Online competitions hide Venue, Tickets, Info, and Music (entries are videos with their own audio)
  • Productions / showcases hide the whole competition layer (Age Groups through Awards, plus Entry settings and Questions). You only configure Basics, Venue, Tickets, Terms, Info, Music, and Review
Step numbers are stable identifiers, not positions. Entry settings is numbered 18 because it was added later; in the wizard it walks between Sections and Fees.

Navigating the Wizard

  • Use Previous and Next buttons to move between steps
  • Step buttons at the bottom show completion status: a check mark for completed, an asterisk for required, or the step number
  • You can jump to any step by clicking its step button
  • A progress percentage is shown to track your overall completion
  • Optional steps have a "skip" toggle: check "I'll add this later" to skip and move on

Saving and Drafts

  • Your progress is auto-saved locally as you work through the wizard
  • If you close the browser and return later, you'll be prompted to resume your draft
  • Once you complete the wizard and click Create Event, the event is saved to the database
  • After creation, you're automatically redirected to the Event Dashboard where you can continue managing and refining all settings

After Creating Your Event

Once your event is created, it starts as Unpublished. From the Event Dashboard you can:

  • Add branding (logo, colour scheme)
  • Invite judges and assign them to sections (competitions)
  • Configure score cards with criteria (competitions)
  • Build the schedule using the Schedule Builder. For productions this is also where you create your performances
  • Publish the event. Competitions become visible to studios and dancers; for productions, publishing activates the ticket link you share with your audience

See the detailed guides below for each wizard step, and the "Managing Your Event" article for post-creation editing.
